In this review, we summarize the recent developments in the field of water splitting using 2D materials from a theoretical perspective. We address that DFT-based simulations can fast screen the potential spaces of photocatalytic properties with the accuracy comparable to experiments, by investigating the effects of various physical/chemical perturbations.

Due to its high surface to volume ratio it is expected that solar radiation can be efficiently used for water splitting reaction at the surface. Photocatalytic overall water splitting (OWS) is a thermodynamically uphill process (Δ Hϕ = 285.5 KJ mol −1 ), which cannot occur spontaneously. It is composed of two half reactions, namely, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), both of which are the processes of Gibbs free with. Photocatalytic water splitting reaction is a chemical process that involves direct solar energy conversion of H 2 O to H 2 and O 2 on heterogeneous photocatalysts. Upon absorbing photons, the photocatalyst would generate electron-hole pairs whereby the electrons would reduce the H+ ions to H 2 and the holes would oxidize H 2 O to O 2

A polymer pipe is used to hold the photocatalyst suspension and to separate the H 2 and O 2 gas mixture by allowing One of the challenging issues in photocatalytic overall water splitting is to efficiently separate the photogenerated charges and the reduction and oxidation catalytic sites on semiconductor-based photocatalysts. Photocatalytic water splitting is an artificial photosynthesis process with photocatalysis in a photoelectrochemical cell used for the dissociation of water into its constituent parts, hydrogen (H 2 ) and oxygen ( O 2017-08-08 · of photocatalytic water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen by using light from the solar spectrum, which is one of the most investigated photosynthetic reactions. Photocatalytic water splitting using solar energy is considered to be artificial photosynthesis that produces a solar fuel because the reaction Photocatalytic water splitting using solar energy is considered to be artificial photosynthesis that produces a solar fuel because the reaction mimics nature’s photosynthesis not only in its redox reaction type but also in its thermodynamics (water splitting: 1.23 eV vs glucose formation: 1.24 eV).
